Their territory has been described as "the land of the three rivers". One of the three rivers is the Murrumbidgee. A family usually travelled as a small group comprised of a man, his wives, their children and other close family members.

The elders of their community were respected as they are the ones who held power and authority. The Wiradjuri were also a very religious people and believed in a supernatural being called "Balame". In , when the first fleet of convicts arrived in New South Wales with Governor Philip, two occurrences of the smallpox epidemic drastically reduced the population of the Wiradjuri.

Smallpox was a foreign illness to them and they had no immunity to it. European explorers and settlement soon followed in the Wagga Wagga area. In , European exploration of the future site of Wagga Wagga began with the arrival of Captain Charles Sturt during his expedition along the Murrumbidgee and Murray Rivers. Settlement soon followed with some settlers initially squatting on the land. However, in the colonial government regulated land use and provided settlers with a land licensing scheme.

After the war some of the area around Wagga Wagga was designated for settlement by returned soldiers, who faced insurmountable difficulties due to poor and unwatered land, lack of farming experience and lack of access to markets. Many walked off the land after years of backbreaking work. Residential growth continued with a population in of 11, Much of this residential growth was housed in the higher ground to the south, extending to the south of the railway tracks.

A suburb consisting of tents and crude huts, known as "Tent Town", developed along the river providing housing for the poorer residents of Wagga Wagga. In , electricity was provided for the town, with hydro- electric power available from Burrinjuck Dam from Throughout the Riverina in early , a series of rallies were organised by the movement, culminating in a great meeting in Wagga Wagga on 28 February The meeting called on the State and Federal governments to alleviate the concerns of producers in the district or hold a referendum to determine if the Riverina should secede.

The movement petered out following the dismissal of Lang in and the recovery of the regional economy. A major Australian Army camp was constructed at Kapooka in and one year later there were 8, troops in training there with Wagga taking on the characteristics of a garrison town. After the war, Wagga Wagga grew steadily and was proclaimed a city on 17 April Suburbs such as Turvey Park and Kooringal were developed to the south of the city and in the s, residential growth expanded to cover areas such as Tolland and Lake Albert.

The main commercial district also moved south to the Baylis Street end with the development of the Sturt Mall in The City Council developed a series of industrial areas including areas for service and general industries, and agricultural processing and noxious industries were established in a new industrial estate in Bomen. In the s the defence bases in Wagga Wagga again became an important part of the city.

The Army camp at Kapooka was reopened as a recruit training centre from , a role it maintains to this day. After a series of major floods in the early s, the City Council protected the city area on the south flood plain through construction of a levee, completed in The levee was designed to provide protection from floods at levels expected once every one hundred years.

The floats were judged and prizes awarded. In , the Gumi Race ended due to insurance, environmental and health and safety issues. Organised by the South Wagga Apex Club, the people of Wagga and the Riverina once again line the banks of the Murrumbidgee to watch the weird and wonderful, wacky and serious compete to be the first Gumi across the line.

The City, incorporated as a Borough in and proclaimed a City in , has an area of , hectares, and at 30 June , an estimated population of 58, Victory Memorial Gardens established. In Council adopted a city flag, at the time it negotiated a "Coat of Arms" through the College of Arms in London. The stalks of wheat and other motifs incorporated in the design were suggested by Council. The design of the city flag was taken from the central motif of the shield of the Coat of Arms, with the design being made square. They wear distinguishing collars in the form of a W and stand on a base of grass divided by water, representing the building of the City on either side of the river.

Settlement soon followed his discovery of the city. In , Thomas Townshend surveyed the main city area and Wagga Wagga was officially proclaimed a town that same year.
