As Halifax plc, the new bank was the fifth largest in the UK in terms of market capitalisation. Further expansion took place with the acquisition of Clerical Medical Fund Managers , a UK life insurance company.
In , Halifax established Intelligent Finance , a telephone and internet based bank. Halifax branches in the rest of the UK use the Bank of Scotland brand for business banking. The Act was fully implemented on 17 September and the assets and liabilities of Halifax plc transferred to Bank of Scotland plc.
The Halifax brand name was to be retained as a trading name, but it no longer exists as a legal entity. Bank of Scotland plc including its brands such as Halifax became a wholly owned subsidiary of the group. In February , Halifax made significant changes to its current accounts. Halifax has replaced their basic 'Easycash' account with the 'Basic Account'.
They have no unpaid charges and replaced all Visa Electron cards with Visa Debit cards. On 14 November , HBOS was hit by a power failure which affected all branches, cash machines and online banking.
The bank said that the power failure occurred at an IT centre in Copley , West Yorkshire [10] which caused several problems for Halifax's banking system. By the end of its first year of business, the Halifax had members, and a further depositors.

In , the Halifax was incorporated under the Building Societies Act of The remainder of that decade was a very prosperous period. After 50 years in post, the Society's first Secretary, Jonas Taylor, died. His replacement was an energetic individual named Enoch Hill.
Hill had a profound influence on the development of the Halifax over the next 35 years, and oversaw a period of dramatic expansion. Very much a local Society when Hill arrived, by the time he retired in , the Halifax was a truly national institution, with branches open throughout the UK. In , Head Office moved to Commercial Street, and the premises were extended in An office was opened in London in , followed by offices in Glasgow and Edinburgh four years later.
The interwar period also brought new challenges and opportunities for building societies. A severe housing shortage following the First World War, saw the government introduce legislation to promote national house building schemes. Under the Housing Financial Provisions Act of and the Housing Act , building societies were encouraged to advance money to builders and developers at very low rates of interest, repayable over exceptionally long periods. The loans were guaranteed by the government and local authorities.
